Wheelbase: 115.5 The arrival of the 1954 Ford models marked the end of the long-running and beloved flathead V8 engine. Its replacement was the modern, overhead-valve “Y-block”, so called because of its deep crankcase design, and while it also displaced 239 cubic inches, the new engine produced 20 more horsepower in its basic form. The Y-block, which was enlarged and further developed over the years, helped Ford overtake archrival Chevrolet in sales for 1954 and continued to power Ford’s passenger cars until 1962. Styling for 1954 continued the lines of the wider, lower 1952 body redesign with very few changes. Mechanically, Ford models adopted a ball-joint front suspension, which greatly improved ride and handling. The basic Ford chassis was carefully refined with a wheelbase length that increased by just one-half inch. The appropriately named Crestline Sunliner Convertible topped the Ford model line in 1954, with a starting price of just $2,164 with a six-cylinder engine. The V8 engine option added $77 to the purchase price and greatly improved drivability and performance. This particular Sunliner Convertible is one such V8 powered example. It was formerly part of the estate of a doctor, who owned it until 2000 and kept it at his summer home. As such, it was never winter driven and always properly cared for. When the current owner acquired the car, it was reportedly in excellent overall condition. He nevertheless elected to commission a complete restoration of the body, engine and interior in 2005, with no expense spared. The car has been carefully maintained ever since and has been a class winner in various local car shows. Drivability has been greatly improved with a 12-volt conversion and the addition of an auxiliary electric cooling fan and electric fuel pump. Very nicely presented, the car is powered by Ford 239ci V8 engine, mated to an automatic transmission. Additional features include power steering, power windows and a power convertible top, which opens up to reveal a lovely Coral and Black interior and works nicely with the Coral exterior finish. The car is described as being in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition and has about 27,000 original miles. We ship worldwide. Please call Gene for more on this and other cars. 1-856-840-3127.
