Just 630 were produced, and with their Cadillac-level price exceeding $5,000, the Bonneville name emerged as Pontiac’s image leader. For 1959, the Bonneville became a full top-of-the-line series of its own. That same year, Pontiac also introduced its famed “Wide Track” chassis layout, which created the best-handling full-size cars in the industry. From this point, Pontiac firmly established itself as GM’s high-performance division with scores of victories on NASCAR ovals and drag strips alike, gaining valuable press and rapidly growing sales in local showrooms everywhere.
