To SL enthusiasts the best SLs ever brought to the states are the 96-98 model years with the 5-speed automatic and 5.0 Liter 32 Valve V8. 1998 was the final year of the 32 valve 5.0 liter 315 horsepower V8 which is VASTLY superior to the 36 valve 5.0 liter 301 horsepower unit they switched to for 99-06. These engines run much smoother and are known as being more reliable. The build quality of these cars is second to none and can personally attest that these earlier cars are MUCH better built and have that solid, heavy, German and classically Mercedes-Benz feel that the new cars just don't have.
