The Park Avenue Buick's flagship sedan became a distinct model in 1991. Previously the name applied only to a trim of the Electra. The Park Avenue was completely redesigned for 1997; even though its styling is similar to its predecessor, the new model is slightly larger and is built on the General Motors G platform, also used by the Riviera and Oldsmobile Aurora. Buick courts two different buyers with the Park Avenue: the base version of the car targets older customers wanting traditional American luxury, while the supercharged Ultra takes aim at younger customers more interested in performance and likely to consider an import.
