The C-Class is Mercedes-Benz' entry-level sedan. While its dimensions place it squarely in the midsize category, its pricing and equipment levels elevate it to the near-luxury segment. This is a reflection of Mercedes-Benz' new philosophy: offering what it considers the premium choice in a variety of automotive market segments. The C-Class replaced the 190 trim when it was introduced in 1993. Using the -Class nomenclature, the numeric part of a Mercedes-Benz model name reflects the car's engine displacement in liters. For 1998, the exterior of the C-Class has been significantly revised to give it a more sporting appearance.
