Land Rover has been making sport-utility vehicles for about 50 years, and has always enjoyed star status as safari and expedition transport. The newest entry of the British marque, the Freelander went on sale in Europe in 1997 and proceeded to become the best-selling sport-utility vehicle in Europe. As with its Land Rover siblings, the Feelander is designed to provide a civilized ride on the pavement while retaining the ability to handle rough off-road terrain. Land Rover gave its new entry a V6 powertrain before bringing it to North America, and there are high hopes for how it will perform in the very tight SUV market. Howard Mosher, President and CEO of Land Rover North America, Inc. claims Freelander will redefine what Americans think about small sport-utility vehicles.
