With so many automakers jumping on the luxury sport-utility bandwagon, it was only a matter of time before General Motors decided its GMC division needed a compact luxury SUV. That time came in 1998, when the first-generation Envoy went on sale in 4-door, 4-wheel-drive trim. Shown for the first time at the 1997 Chicago Auto Show, the first-generation Envoy was based on the GMC Jimmy, but featured premium treatment inside and out. The all-new, second-generation Envoy is more than eight inches longer, four inches wider and seven inches taller than the model it replaced.
