The GMC Sonoma was one of the first domestically built compact pickups when it was released in 1982 as the S-15. For the 1992 model year the name was changed to Sonoma. The truck''s first major redesign occurred in 1994; in 1996 Sonoma first offered an optional third door on extended-cab trims. Sonoma offers a wide range of optional equipment, making it possible for nearly any buyer to get a vehicle fitting his or her requirements. In years past the GMC nameplate was a familiar sight on a wide variety of heavy trucks and buses; GMC has left those markets to concentrate on light trucks.
