In January, 2001, Volvo unveiled a concept it called the Volvo Adventure Concept Car (ACC). The concept was designed to gauge customer reaction to a possible sport-utility vehicle coming from the Swedish automaker. Apparently the reaction was good, and with great fanfare, the XC90 debuted at the 2002 Detroit Auto Show. Closely matching the style and dimension of the ACC, the XC90 is built off the P2 large car platform which it shares with the Volvo flagship S80 sedan. The XC90 went on sale in the fall of 2002.
