Vehicle Overview Nissan says the redesigned Maxima returns to its four-door-sports-car roots. That's a designation the car held in previous generations, though it's one that eroded a bit in recent years. As Nissan's flagship sedan, the Maxima competes with cars like the Toyota Avalon and Ford Taurus. Underneath the new sheet metal, the Maxima's V-6 now makes 290 horsepower. The cabin goes for broke with luxury: Available features like a dual-panel moonroof, heated steering wheel and rearview camera could pit uplevel models against entry-level luxury cars like the Lincoln MKZ and Lexus ES. On the safety front, the Maxima adds a standard electronic stability system the system was optional on the previous car. When it hits dealerships this summer, the Maxima will come in two trim levels: 3.5 S and 3.5 SV. Exterior Boomerang-shaped headlights and a wider grille sit low on the Maxima's front end, a distinct departure from the Altima's slicked-back look. The taillights, too, are a bit lower on the tail. Eighteen-inch alloy wheels are standard fog lights and 19-inch wheels are optional. A wider track the distance between the left and right wheels and shorter wheelbase aim to enhance the Maxima's driving dynamics. Nissan said its goal was to create one of the best-handling front-wheel-drive sedans in the world, which is certainly a tall order. The Maxima now shares platforms with the redesigned Altima, which isn't a bad tree to fall from. Other enhancements include larger rear brakes and a new steering system tailored after the one in the 350Z sports car. Interior The Maxima's cabin could probably get away with an Infiniti badge. It draws elements from Infiniti's G and M sedans, while the wraparound dash looks much like the one in the Altima. All told, it easily rivals the cabin in a Buick Lucerne, another upscale player in this group. Depending on configuration, the rear seat can come with a center pass-thru or as a conventional 60/40-split folding seat. Trunk volume is 14.2 cubic feet, well short of the cavernous trunk space in a Lucerne or Taurus. Even in 3.5 S trim, the Maxima comes well-equipped standard features include a moonroof, power front seats, a six-CD stereo and dual-zone automatic climate control. The 3.5 SV adds leather, Bose audio and more. High-end options include heated seats, a ventilated driver's seat, a power-adjustable steering wheel and a navigation system with real-time traffic displays. Under the Hood The Maxima's 3.5-liter V-6 makes an estimated 290 hp and 261 pounds-feet of torque. Like before, a continuously variable automatic transmission is standard. It has Sport and manual modes, the latter accomplished via a manual shift gate or with optional steering-wheel paddle shifters. Safety Side-impact airbags for the front seats and side curtain airbags for both rows are standard. So are four-wheel-disc antilock brakes, traction control and an electronic stability system.
