This true two-mode system allows the Highlander Hybrid Limited to be driven at low speeds on electric power alone, also using auto engine-shut-down/start-up to save gas in stop-and-go traffic. As well, the hybrid system features regenerative braking to help recharge its nickel-metal hydride battery. Toyota and Lexus have demonstrated the ability to build two types of hybrids.
